I’ll be off for a couple of days in Barcelona where I’ll be attending Sonar and its infamous beach parties and from there on I’ll go to Cannes for the Cannes Lions 2007. I’ve set up a moblog for the agency I’m working for so you’ll be able to have a live report from us here. But first I need some rest…zzzzzzzz

Pac-Manhattan

manhattan.jpg

Pac-Manhattan is a large-scale urban game that utilizes the New York City grid to recreate the 1980’s video game sensation Pac-Man. This analog version of Pac-man is being developed in NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications graduate program, in order to explore what happens when games are removed from their ‘little world’ of tabletops, televisions and computers and placed in the larger ‘real world’ of street corners, and cities.

A player dressed as Pac-man will run around the Washington square park area of Manhattan while attempting to collect all of the virtual ‘dots’ that run the length of the streets. Four players dressed as the ghosts Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde will attempt to catch Pac-man before all of the dots are collected.

Using cell-phone contact, Wi-Fi internet connections, and custom software designed by the Pac-Manhattan team, Pac-man and the ghosts will be tracked from a central location and their progress will be broadcast over the internet for viewers from around the world…

Nanika’s Wind

wind_nanika.jpg

Nanika is a company founded with the aim to explore interaction between man and machine beyond traditional input and output.

Wind, together with SwimmingMessageSystem, is an attempt to bring a bit of nature into the Nokia’s Flagship Stores, the concept of this particular piece being a wind blowing through the store taking messages submitted by users via SMS and flying them across the different landscapes. The piece is implemented as real time software running on anything from 24 to 42 screens, depending on the store layout, providing a seamless canvas.

These interactive pieces have been created for Nokia’s Flagship Store project, which sees high-end retail experiences opened in shopping capitals around the world.

SMS Guerilla Projector

These Brits, that I discovered last night, are pretty messed-up in their creations. It goes from the TV Predator (a jealous picture frame that fools around with your tv by switching channels randomly, turning it on/off at weird moments, etc.), the Newton Virus (an art virus that plays with your computers’ gravity) and last but not least the SMS Guerilla Projector: this projector is a home made, fully functioning device that enables the user to project text based SMS messages in public spaces, in streets, onto people, inside cinemas, shops, houses…I love the concept to share your opinion in public spaces with your mobile

Cell Phone Disco (aka Mobile Disco)

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

front_banner.jpg

Cell Phone Disco is a playful experimental installation made out of flashing cells. By multiplication of a mobile phone gadget, only slightly altered consumer product, we created a space to experience the invisible body of the mobile phone.

Flashing cells basically consist of one or more LEDs, battery and a sensor that detects electromagnetic (EM) radiation transmitted by an active mobile phone. When the sensor detects EM waves it sets off the LEDs to flash for a couple of seconds. In general the flashing cells are enclosed in a plastic casing on a strap and sold as a fashion accessory for a mobile phone.

Soundbombs

Soundbombs are New-Media-Accessories. Each one a lowtech object for interactive transmission. An integrated soundmodule makes it possible to record any given sound and then activate it through a motiondetector. As a Non-Visual Graffiti, with its origin in streetart, Soundbombs give the possibility to tag a place in an accoustic form: a welcoming greeting at the entrance or a warning of a bad restaurant. Each owner can leave a personal message anywhere and at any time. Soundbombs can whistle, laugh, belch or recite a poem.
I bow to the creators of this concept and I love the way streetart is evolving and starting to use electronic devices like the led throwies or the electro-graf
